The 10 spots at the bottom of the character select screen (which normally are invisible until unlocked) are reserved for for downloadable content (DLC) characters, which at first will only be available via pre-order, but are sure to be released in two packs sometime after release (one for 5 Heroes and one for 5 Villains). This goes especially fast if you have access to Superman in between playing levels.
